While Thanksgiving in 2017 is usually a time of relaxation, good food, and the warm company of family and friends, the origination of this holiday came out of a period in our history that was not so easy going.
The pilgrims who first celebrated Thanksgiving with the Native Americans back in 1621 had gone through tremendous hardship, having just left their loved ones across the Atlantic Ocean. They ventured far away from their homes in search of new opportunity and were met with the challenges of creating a completely new way of life. Food was scarce and difficult to grow, not all the Natives were welcoming to their arrival, and the bitter cold was causing not only discomfort, but sickness and death.
Nevertheless, the first settlers of what would eventually become the United States persisted in their search for happiness and good fortune. Despite the heartache of resettling on new soil, they held strong to their faith that their dreams would prevail and found great comfort in giving thanks by coming together and breaking bread with one another. This simple act of gratitude has become central to our culture, so much so that nearly 400 years later, we still celebrate this very special holiday we call Thanksgiving.
When you come together with your family and friends this holiday season, I’d like to ask that you take a moment to recognize what you are truly grateful for in your life. Also consider what Thanksgiving traditions you hold dearest to you. Who do you share these moments with and how many generations have celebrated in this way? Share the happiness of these special traditions with us on social media by visiting us on Facebook. We’d love to hear from you!
Take in the abundance and love that surrounds you, not just today, but every day. Realize that nothing should be taken for granted, because there are people in our past and there are people today who sacrificed and even gave up their lives to ensure our happiness and way of life.
Know that today, Team DSC® and I are grateful for you. We are thankful that you are in our lives and that we have the opportunity to celebrate this special holiday with you in our hearts.
Wishing you and your loved ones a truly Happy Thanksgiving!
With our deepest gratitude,
Jerry Meek and Team DSC®
